THE MAZE RUNNER series really did sneak up on me. When the first film in the trilogy was set to be released, I didn’t really pay much attention to it, writing it off as another one of Hollywood’s feeble attempts to find the next gem in young-adult literature in order to cash in on its adaptation. However, when I sat down in front of the film with an open mind, I was genuinely surprised by how well it worked and the world that Wes Ball was able to create from James Dashner’s novels. I also had the chance to speak with the cast of the first film, and found them incredibly passionate about trying to do something different here. This wasn’t some generic YA property. There was some meat on these bones and plenty of mystery to unlock moving forward, and they were all about carrying the torch forward in order to deliver some compelling movies along the way.
I had the chance to talk with Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario once again, this time for the second leg of the trilogy, THE SCORCH TRIALS. New additions to the series, Giancarlo Espositio and Rosa Salazar, also joined in on the fun, as we discussed the importance of trust in THE MAZE RUNNER stories, as well as the difficulty in pulling off the middle part of a trilogy and similarities with the STAR WARS Saga. Enjoy.
