Sami Zayn is the underdog from the underground, and, from his devoted following in the NXT Universe, you’d think he has his own band, the Zayniacs. However, Sami Zayn is just a world-class performer with a heart of gold who lets his passion for professional wrestling shine through in everything he does within the squared circle. Having traveled around the globe in order to learn different styles and continue getting better, Zayn has really hit the ground running as one of the popular faces of WWE’s budding NXT brand. Typically wrestling with the fans’ soundtrack of “Olé, Olé, Olé,” Zayn rose to the top of NXT in recent months, defeating Adrian Neville for his first NXT Championship. A bitter feud with Kevin Owens and a bout with injury derailed that, but it should be no time at all before Zayn is back chasing after the title he believes is rightfully his and with a rabid NXT Universe lending him all kinds of support on his quest.
When I caught up with Sami Zayn at this year’s WrestleMania, we got to chat about his health status a bit, what it felt like backstage to witness the NXT fans coming out in full force for their big show in San Jose, his feelings on still being able to be a part of it in some respect and just the growth the brand has seen in a few short years.
