I’m not quite sure when I started to come around on Zac Efron as an actor. The HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL run never really struck a chord with me. There was no question the man was talented, but could he survive outside of the Disney machine like so many have been unable to? Needless to say, Efron has shown a great deal of versatility in the years since, even rocking comedy recently with a door-opening turn in NEIGHBORS that proved he’s more than just a heart throb. Efron has a lot of untapped potential, still only 27, and I believe we haven’t even scratched the surface yet on what Efron can do.
Play an EDM DJ trying to make his mark on the world is up next though in his new film WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS, directed by Max Joseph (best known for his involvement in the MTV series CATFISH). In the film, Efron is trying to chase his dream of creating life-changing music that he’ll be remembered for, and along the way, he’s going to have to face some tough choices on sacrificing friends and love in order to reach his ultimate goal.
I recently had the chance to talk with both Max Joseph and Zac Efron as they came through Miami, asking them about those difficult calls one has to make when seeking greatness as well as humanizing the mystique of EDM DJs in that scene. Enjoy.
