Marvel.com is reporting today that Michael Douglas has signed on to play Hank Pym in Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN.
Wait a minute.
Hank Pym IS ANT-MAN. Edgar Wright has already cast ANT-MAN as Paul Rudd . . . has Variety lost it’s damn mind after all that drunken Tom- foolery at the Golden Globes last night?
Nope. Turns out comic books are a complicated business. . . Hank Pym was the original ANT-MAN and Paul Rudd will be playing his successor – Scott Lang; a thief who stole the ANT-MAN tech from Pym way back in the funny books. So is that the story MARVEL and Edgar Wright will be telling this time around?
I don’t know – sounds kind of boring to me.
Most superhero movies are saddled with a kind of slow burn origin tale and while that’s well and fine and good – haven’t we seen ENOUGH of those in the past 10 years?
Is ANT-MAN going to give us TWO of them? Is this going to be a “passing of the torch” tale where Paul Rudd chases the legend of Michael Douglas around like Nite Owl from WATCHMEN?
I wish they would make Pym the villain.
Think about it . . .
The fans WANT Hank Pym and Pym is the guy who (in the comics) created Ultron. We already know Ultron is the big bad in AVENGERS2 so this is a bridge to build that. More on that in a second or so.
ANT-MAN is a comic book fan favorite but name one ANT-MAN villain. No fair checking Wikipedia. ANT-MAN has no really great nemesis.
Make Hank Pym the villain and he does now. He’s his own worst enemy so to speak !
Pym has always been a nasty sonofabitch in the comics anyway so this actually allows them to not shy away from that part of his personality and actually maybe expound on it . . . it’s sort of kinda . . . genius.
I LOVE this idea. Okay – back to Ultron – I know Kevin Feige has said that Pym doesn’t create the Ultron in AVENGERS2 , but I say . . . not so fast . . .
He says that Pym doesn’t create him in AVENGERS2.
The single coolest thing about the comic mini series AGE OF ULTRON was the fact that Ultron was found to be attacking the Avengers from the future.
THE FUTURE !
Hold that thought.
Let’s look at the MARVEL cinematic timeline. PHASE 2 – IRON MAN 3, THOR 2, CAPTAIN AMERICA 2, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, AVENGERS 2-AGE OF ULTRON
PHASE 3 – ANT-MAN
See that? ANT-MAN comes AFTER Avengers2. It’s in the FUTURE.
Hank Pym could ostensibly create Ultron in ANT-MAN and send him back in time to destroy The Avengers in AVENGERS2: AGE OF ULTRON.
How ridiculously INSANE would it be if AVENGERS2 ends with a cliff hanger that leads into ANT-MAN.
THAT would be some new comic book ground broken up on that big ol’ IMAX 3-D screen.
I mean I doubt it will happen like that, but man – that would be pretty freaking GEEKTACULAR.
